About this week's journey

Week 10 of the Founder Journey marks a shift in how Chris and Helen are thinking about Built Not Born In Business. What began three years ago as a place to talk openly about the reality of business has gradually become a much bigger part of their work and their lives. The podcast first gave them somewhere to share the difficult parts as well as the wins, before growing into interviews with business owners and founders they never expected to spend hours talking with. That growth has changed their thinking about what Built Not Born could become next.

The most immediate decision is a new dedicated Built Not Born podcast set. Their existing podcast studio is designed to work for different clients, so the new space gives them the chance to build something specifically around their own brand and creative ideas. They also want to document the studio build itself, including how they try to create a high-end result without spending like a high-end production. For Chris and Helen, this is not just about a nicer backdrop. It is part of turning Built Not Born into a broader platform with more planned for 2027.

They also reflect on why podcasting has become so commercially useful for them. Chris says he believes the financial return has been several times what they have invested, although he is clear that this is an estimate rather than a calculated figure. More importantly, both of them talk about the less obvious returns: referrals, friendships, mentoring, a stronger network and the chance to build genuine relationships with people they would not otherwise have met. That experience is now shaping their desire to help other businesses understand what a B2B podcast can create beyond audience numbers alone.

This week's progress included a call with Tobias Allen about a possible collaboration around the next stage of Built Not Born, although nothing has been finalised yet. Chris and Helen also recorded an episode with James Martin, whose story prompted a wider conversation about building businesses, personal wealth and the sacrifices founders often make before they see the financial reward. Alongside that, their workwear business remained busy, Chris completed client video projects and the team kept going through a week when illness affected several people. The result is a week that feels less like one big launch and more like the point where several pieces of a much bigger plan are starting to connect.

This week's lessons

What we're learning

  • A project can become more valuable than its original purpose when you keep following the opportunities it creates.
  • Chris and Helen say the value of their podcast now extends beyond direct sales into relationships, referrals, friendships and mentoring.
  • A dedicated Built Not Born set will let them design around their own brand rather than creating a studio that has to suit every client.
  • They are exploring how Tobias Allen could support the next stage of Built Not Born, although the details are not yet finalised.
  • The week also included a James Martin interview, client video work and keeping several businesses moving while much of the team was unwell.
